An Introduction to Antique Furniture Part Two

Early forms of furniture were primitive items constructed quite often out of solid pieces of timber. Though quite ornate at times they were still fairly basic items that lacked the finesse of later centuries and manufacturers.

As to how important furniture is?Early Drawers were characterised by the thick sides or linings which were usually channelled so that they could run on bars or runners fixed to the sides of the carcase. As you can imagine these developed quite considerably as the items of furniture or drawers that they were designed to support became more and more delicate and sophisticated. From the 17th Century onwards as with other forms of furniture, the practice of just using simple pegs and runners all but died out to be replaced by more sophisticated runners being placed beneath rather than at the sides of the drawers.Well the answer primarily to all of the above questions is by and large no but as in all these cases the situation is like anything that relates to the study of History. By only correctly understanding where we have come from, how we arrived here and what we did, can we begin to have any real hope of moving forward without repeating the same mistakes over and over again. However as with all things, the prohibitive cost of craftsmanship meant that by the late 19th Century suppliers of Furniture were looking at techniques that could help bring the cost of manufacture down to more manageable and cost efficient proportions and hence the introduction of the earliest forms of machine assisted furniture. As you can imagine the earliest forms of pegs were quite primitive in their manufacture and acted more like wedges and tended to tighten the joints they were hammered into. For the purpose of this article we will be looking at Furniture from the following aspects: Pegged Construction and Drawer Construction, and then in the next article a detailed look at styles of two items of furniture, Chairs and Tables.Drawer ConstructionQuite often, as the years would go by these joints and pegs would find themselves being pushed out of shape and this is quite often an indicator of firstly, how old a piece is and secondly how well cared for an item of furniture is with the appearance of these joints.I am often asked as to why a study of furniture is so important? Will it solve the Worlds ills, can it help solve World Poverty (yes if the stuff is manufactured in the right places at the right costs but that is another matter)?Pegged ConstructionIt was during the 17th and 18th Centuries that Furniture Construction as we know more of it nowadays came into its own. With the appearance of Thomas Chippendale (1718-19) furniture manufacture became more sophisticated in its design and execution with finely executed joints and a carcase (body of the item of furniture) that was as well made as the faade.Until the early 18th Century, furniture was constructed by and large using a Pegged or Joined technique using Mortise-and-Tenon joints held together held together quite often just by wooden pegs or dowels and on very rare occasions, nails.

Well what else would you sit and write on?

The ceramic tile wound up not being ceramic tile at all! It was tin tile that was glued to a masonite backing board. The backing board was itself glued to the plaster walls and nailed every eight to 10 inches. So while the tiles came down very easily using just a screwdriver, getting they masonite backing board off the plaster was a nightmare. Not only were the plaster walls full of holes from the nails, big globs of glue was smeared all over the walls. At first I tried sanding. All that did was create a cloud of dust. After two hours of creating dust clouds I had only managed in clearing off a 2' x 2' square area. I talked to a number of contractors who only shook their heads and offered me luck in removing the glue from the walls. Someone suggested I use glue remover but I didn't want the fumes in the house. Someone else suggested a strong scraper but I wasn't strong enough to remove this glue. Finally, someone suggested a heat gun. I was skeptical. How would a little heat gun remove 60 years of hard and glue? Much to my surprise, it worked! Now it didn't work easily. It was still a lot of hard work, but by working slowly, and steadily, I was able to remove all remnants of glue in about four days.

Old House Remodeling: Removing Old Tile and Glue

When you live in old house like I do, remodeling is always a challenge and a surprise. I am currently involved in a major kitchen remodel. Our kitchen like many kitchens, has seen better days. It was installed in the house was built back in 1945 and I'm sure it's has served its previous owners well. However, modern kitchens are large and open. This kitchen, like most kitchens of its era, a small enclosed off. We decided to open the kitchen out by removing part of the wall, removing old tile from the walls, and updating the entire kitchen with new cabinets and appliances.

I hope this tip and technique helps you if you ever encounter a similar situation. I know what I first started removing the glue from the wall, I would get discouraged thinking it would never end. However, by working slowly and steadily, I managed to get a little bit done each and every hour. I took frequent breaks, and went outside for a breather every couple of hours. It didn't help that I was doing this in the middle of summer when the temperature was in the 90s. However with perseverance, this task can be finished easily. And if you do it yourself, you'll save all the money that you would pay contractor to do the exact same thing. With vessel sinks, you also have the option of utilizing existing cabinetry; be aware that some remodeling will be necessary if you choose this route. Proper installation is paramount. If you decide to DIY your new vessel sink, check out the multitude of informative websites that are focused on providing tips that pertain to bathroom remodeling, read the instructions, and ask questions—many online retailers welcome questions.

Local Philippines: Viva La Vigan

If youre idea of a relaxing vacation is exploring the rich cultural heritage of the Philippines, then visiting Vigan is the right place for you. This fifth-class city in the northern region allows tourists to travel back in time with its unique antiquity and idyllic atmosphere. Dubbed as Heritage City of the North, Vigan is described by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as the best preserved example of a planned Spanish colonial town in Asia.

Vigan is best known for Calle Crisologo, a 500-meter long street made from cobblestone. Its design is a mixture of 18th century Filipino and Spanish architecture. Feel the thrill of living during the Spanish era by riding a kalesa, or a horse-driven carriage. Calle Crisologo, where a number of movies and television shows depicting the Spanish times were shot, is also home to hotels, pension houses, restaurants, and souvenir shops.St. Paul Metropolitan CathedralAnother must-visit place in Vigan is Baluarte. Covering an area of 80 hectares, this zoological park provides shelter to various animal species such as pythons, tigers, snakes, birds, ponies, and many more. Baluarte, which is owned by Ilocos Sur Gov. Luis Chavit Singson, also has a garden where different butterfly species are roaming around freely. Cameras are allowed inside Baluarte. And the best thing is admission is free.Calle CrisologoSolid oak furniture although more expensive is the very best type of material to use for furniture. It outlasts oak veneer by decades and provides an unparalleled style and elegance in the room. Whether it is Mobel oak furniture you choose, Cuba oak or another style altogether you will be pleased you made the right choice and will continue to enjoy your furniture for many years to come. You can tell a product is solid oak rather than a veneer just from sight and feel. Solid oak is very heavy because it is such a dense wood. Furniture with a veneer is much easier to pick up and move around. Having a good look at the furniture you will be able to see the different woods being used, especially if there is just a part veneer. Opening the drawers or peering underneath will usually provide the signs. Make sure you buy your furniture from a reputable seller for reassurance that the item you are buying is in fact solid oak and not a partial or full veneer.Vigan also has its share of fine beaches. One of them is Apatot Beach, a popular recreation site of local residents. This body of water is rich in historic past. At the end of World War II, the United States used Apatot Beach to unload armaments for American soldiers serving in the area.Solid oak doesn't fade or wear away of suffer from everyday use. It is such a hard, dense wood that it withstands anything, even water. Because it is so water resistant it can even be used in the bathroom. Oak furniture will never need replacing. The same cannot be said for oak veneer however which will likely need replacing between 5 and 10 years after purchase. Although the initial cost of solid oak furniture is greater, the fact that is lasts makes it in the long term a better investment. Furthermore as it ages it even gains value. There is little value in furniture made from plywood with an oak veneer - antique shops in years to come will not be stocking this.If you are fond of various memorabilia, then you must enter the Crisologo Museum. This two-storey building located at the end of the Crisologo Street houses history exhibits, antique furniture, and literary collection. The car in which former Gov. Carmeling Crisologo was ambushed in 1961 is also displayed at the museum. When solid oak furniture is present in a room, it provides an instant style and elegance that is often absent from other timbers or materials. If you want your home to look its best then there is no doubt that oak furniture will make that happen. It is very versatile and comes in a range of colours. For smaller or more modern homes, a lighter tone will work best. Larger or more traditional rooms work best with darker shades.Apatot BeachTourists will never get bored in Vigan. There are lots of tourist attractions to choose from in the city aside from the dozens of proudly standing ancestral houses. Here are some of them. One of the much-awaited events in Vigan is the Longanisa Festival. This annual event seeks to promote the local longanisa (native sausage) industry. The festival, which is celebrated on the third week of January, features street dancing, trade and food fairs, and various cultural exhibits. Longanisa is often served with fried rice and egg. There is a place for oak veneer furniture. On furniture that is rarely seen and rarely used, a veneer can work extremely well. It is cheap to purchase and can make very cheap materials such as plywood, MDF or chipboard look like oak. The difficulty is that veneers are simply not strong or durable. They can warp or bubble and gradually over time the wood starts to look shabby and will eventually need replacing. Solid oak furniture does not suffer from this blight. It will last decades, even lifetimes. Solid oak antique furniture often gets passed down from one generation to another because it continuously outlasts it owners! Antique shops today house oak furniture from hundreds of years ago that still looks as good as ever. Rather like a bottle of wine, oak gets better with age which is another reason it is so valuable.

How To Spot Treasures At Garage Sales

Do a little research on the sales in the paper first. If the sale is being held in an upscale area, chances are good that they may have some antiques or other valuable items that they want to get rid of. Don't underestimate other sales though, you never know what people might have. Some sales may turn out to be bust while others that didn't sound good in the paper may be a boon.

Moving sales are sometimes the best sales since the seller is more motivated to get rid of their items or they may be desperate to get rid of some things that they can't take with them.

Get there early! The early bird gets the worm. Many dealers and eBayers get to the sales they have scoped out to be the best ones early, sometimes an hour before the sale is supposed to start. They do this not only to be the first ones in to buy, but to also potentially look at or even make a deal before the sale even starts. They are also hoping that, by getting there early, the sale will be already set up and ready for buyers to look at, then they can say oops, I got here early and then the seller will let them in early. This is one way the serious "dealers" get the real deals. They get there before everyone else. This is also how dealers get the great prices, since so often, the seller has no idea what something is worth, the dealer who gets there first can offer a tiny fraction of the price, make it sound good and then traipse off with it without anyone else ever knowing it was available. The seller probably even thinks they got a good price.

To many people who have had multiple garage sales, the early bird dealers are known as "vultures". It's a good name for them too, since they are experts at not only taking advantage of the timing, but also their own expertise and the sellers lack of expertise. When you get to a sale a few minutes early and you see other, serious looking people there, standing around and waiting, there's a good chance they are "vultures" and you have stumbled upon a potentially great sale. Many sellers find vultures annoying or opportunistic, so I don't recommend using this strategy. If you do decide to try being a vulture, make sure to respect the sellers wishes. If a garage sale ad says, "no early birds", they mean it. Respect their wishes. Just being nice is underrated, you're more likely to get a great deal by being nice and friendly than being underhanded or aggressive.

Don't underestimate what you can get when getting there later in the day. When the sale is about to close or even when the seller is cleaning up and putting things away, you may just find something other people have missed and get a great deal for it.

Timing is important, don't forget to schedule and prioritize the sales you plan to attend. They often start at different times, so you can hit one that starts at 8, right when it starts. Then you can hit another right afterwards that starts at 8:30.

Did something catch your eye earlier in the day but you didn't buy it when you had the chance? Maybe it's still there! Go back later in the day to see something you regret not buying. Late in the day, sellers may be even more willing to negotiate.

One of the most important tips is to have cash with you. Most sellers, unless they know you already, will absolutely not accept checks at a garage sale. Make sure to have enough cash on you, so you can buy what you want or make an offer right then and there. Also, dont show your money. If you have a ten dollar bill in your hand and you offer the seller $3 for something, this makes it less likely they will take a lower offer. Of course, dont forget to haggle, this is the point of garage sales!

High tail it out of any sales where the seller is firm on all their items or is asking close to retail prices. Also, try to weed out the sales by the same people that have never ending, or perennial garage sales. Every area has them.

Be ethical. If you can see the seller is in dire straits and needs money or if they are raising money for someones surgery or a charity of some kind, dont be too aggressive in your haggling. You can get a great deal, while still being ethical.

One way to narrow down your search for treasures is to skip the time wasters, items that are not likely worth much, and zone in on the stuff that might be worth something. Some time wasters include books, newer toys, baby stuff, CD's, DVD's, posters, Beanie Babies, Furby's, magazines, electronics, computer stuff, etc.

Things to check out first, basically anything from the 70's or before may have some worth or potential future worth. Also, any antique or vintage clothing, jewelry, toys, household items, furniture, kitchen items, tools, glass, porcelain, pottery, textiles, clocks, silver and paintings. Head for anything that looks old or vintage and check it out.

Potentially great finds include:

- Signed art pieces or sculptures or unsigned art that is of exceptional quality
- Signed vintage and costume jewelry or unsigned jewelry that is of exceptional quality and good condition
- First edition and signed books by known authors
- Vintage toys of all kinds in good condition
- Vintage kitchen items including canisters, gadgets, hand towels etc.
- Vintage clothing in good condition
- Antique furniture in original condition with a natural patina
- Antique tools of all kinds
- Vintage or antique porcelain and pottery with marks
- Vintage or antique glass items by known makers
- Antique or vintage silver items
- Old embroidered textiles
- Antique clocks

Once you have your trunk full of potential treasures, it's time to go home and research your items. The Internet is a perfect resource for this. From finding websites or auctions selling similar items to getting book recommendations for offline researching, the Internet is a treasure trove in itself. Be sure to take advantage of it!

Why Solid Oak Furniture Is Better Than Veneer

Furniture that has an oak veneer is still legally classed as oak furniture, but the differences between furniture with an oak veneer and solid oak are glaringly obvious. Oak veneer is made by placing a piece of genuine oak on top of another type of wood. Although the finish is oak and can be extremely attractive, underneath a softer, less durable wood is used. It is also far cheaper than choosing solid oak alternatives, but it can be a false economy. Read on to see why solid oak is always better than oak veneer.

Different Styles of Oak Furniture

There is a lot of oak furniture out and about. Some of it is old, some of it is new and it comes in a whole range of different styles. Sometimes people think that all oak furniture is old and antique looking, but it doesn't have to be. There are a whole range of different styles and no matter what your individual taste is you will be able to find the right type of furniture made from oak to match. This article provides information about the four main styles of interior design that exist and what furniture might be suitable.

An antique is something collectible. It may be a piece of antique furniture that you want to collect to enhance the look of a room, or a piece of antique pottery to decorate a corner cupboard, or some antique books, antique camera and photographs, antique jewelry, antique money, antique car, antique clocks, or antique watches that you want to hand down to your grandchildren but the items must be rare enough to be considered an antique. The others are just secondhand goods junk. Most people have a common misconception about an antique: the older they look, the more antique they must be. Appearance has nothing to do with it, just because a piece looks like it came out of grandma's attic does not necessarily mean that its an antique. The value of an antique is based on demand due to suitability and limited supply. Many people don't realize that there are many types of technology that can help to remedy water damage, and that the average household does not have the capability to deal with such a disaster. It's time to enlist professional help. You might not know a lot about the restoration and cleanup industry because it's not the kind of thing you have to deal with every day. Even so, they are on call, ready to help save your beautiful furniture. You have to save it. You run from the room, ready to do everything you can to restore centuries worth of careful preservation. You grab your cherry-scented air spray, a bucket, and paper towels and have almost reached the doorway when you realize that paper towels are not going to fix this.Another style of home the people like is modern. Although not minimalist as such, modern homes do tend to be free from clutter and be light and airy. Usually antique furniture is not very common with more contemporary and modern designs being chosen. Wood is a material that is often found in modern homes, but usually in a contemporary way. Coffee tables could well be made from oak as could bedroom furniture too. The wood will be interspersed with other modern materials such as metal or glass to provide the overall look and effect of serenity and calm.

Because oak can be used to make modern, traditional and even contemporary furniture, it is a very versatile wood and can be used (and look right at home) in most settings. Whether a home is formal with solid oak furniture positioned on an axis around a fireplace, or casual where everything is jumbled in together, there is plenty of room for all types of oak furniture. From an oak tv unit to coffee table and beyond you can enjoy dressing your home with this beautiful and versatile material.

Antiques The Modern Day Treasure Hunt

In today's world, everything thats old can be described as antiques and generally speaking thats quite true. A product is considered to be an antique if it is over a hundred years old or is rare enough to have some value. In other words, these are old items that are in limited supply.

Today, it looks like they might as well have gone down with the Titanic. It's not just the appearance, either. The smell is equally overwhelming. Bacteria and fungi have good taste, and they are very eagerly devouring the elegant furniture. This isn't water damage. It's water desolation. Most people become fascinated in an antique for two reasons; either they have an interest in collecting antique purely for personal enjoyment and are willing to shell out money for antique restoration or they inherited it from a family member. The most common are antique pottery, antique car, antique furniture, antique books, antique camera and photographs, antique clocks, antique money, antique jewelry and antique watches. However they came about it, everyone wants to be sure of one thing that what they buy or inherit will escalate in value as time goes by. That is what antique collection is all about. There are two main principles that apply when collecting an antique: The first is to know everything that you can about the antique that interests you and second is to obtain them at the lowest possible price. Doing so will not only give you satisfaction and enjoyment, but at the same time you will also be assured that your investment will appreciate in value. Its true that people could have bought a piece of furniture to decorate their home a long time ago and that furniture, if it were of fine quality, would now be worth something. But only a professional appraiser can guarantee that, and appraising costs about $100-150 an hour. So if you are keen on bringing you item in an antique auction and contemplating about asking someone how much an item is worth, be prepared to shell out a few bucks for the information. Appraisers charge so much because they shoulder the lions share for insurance companies and lawyers settling estates. Although appraising is not an exact science, it still requires an appraiser to do lots of research and then prepare a detailed report thats acceptable in a court of law.

Leaking Hot Water Tanks And Antiques Don't Mix

Your antique furniture is swimming in hot water, and now you're really in hot water as well. All your mother's prized antique furniture, even the Louis XVI armchair, is stewing in a half-foot of cloudy water. Yesterday, each piece had survived centuries of children, insects, natural disasters, and naughty animals with surprising grace.

Some people only developed an interest in antique because they inherited an item or a whole house full of antique from a relative. The dollar signs started to appear and they began their hunt for some antique appraisals and antique auction. But what most failed to consider is that much of what Great Grandmother had is probably just junk, unless she was a seasoned collector whos into antique restoration or an expert in antique appraisals. The third and final style that people tend to be drawn towards is that of casual. Have you ever been in homes where there seems to be no rhyme or reason for anything. Where the overall cosy feel is provided by all sorts of items, furniture, nic-nacs and materials? This is the casual style and it means that any type of material will be used, any style of furniture and anything can be made into a feature in the home. Oak is a popular material amongst those who like the casual look so the chances are good that it will be used here. An Introduction to Antique Furniture Part Two

Early forms of furniture were primitive items constructed quite often out of solid pieces of timber. Though quite ornate at times they were still fairly basic items that lacked the finesse of later centuries and manufacturers.

Some antique styles can prove to be very expensive but antique white bedroom furniture is in fact more affordable than the majority of its competition. There is the opportunity to pick up some real bargains. Although there are some very expensive antique white furniture sets around, at least this gives you the choice. You can choose the set that best fits your budget so you do not have to break the bank to enhance your home with antique white bedroom furniture and neither do you have to compromise on quality. Whatever combination you are looking for, you can get it!Well the answer primarily to all of the above questions is by and large no but as in all these cases the situation is like anything that relates to the study of History. By only correctly understanding where we have come from, how we arrived here and what we did, can we begin to have any real hope of moving forward without repeating the same mistakes over and over again. Each Hekman reproduction desk bears a numbered plate and will be registered to the owner. Each desk and chair will be accompanied by a certificate of authenticity signed by Christopher and Jeanne-Marie Dickens."But you can get so involved with engineering that it stifles creativity," he said. "Balancing the two is a daily battle for me. It is a real challenge to create a beautiful thing and get it through the manufacturing process.Smith was in England only one week. He settled into an apartment above the garage at the 700-year-old rectory the Dickenses call home, removed his bandages and began to sketch. "I drew and slept, drew and slept," he recalled. He sketched in full detail more than a dozen pieces of furniture. As you can imagine the earliest forms of pegs were quite primitive in their manufacture and acted more like wedges and tended to tighten the joints they were hammered into.PHOTO : Thirteen drawers with jewel-box quality cluster maple burl fronts and cast brass hardware are featured in this William and Mary chest-on-stand in walnut solids.PHOTO : When a winter storm left the Dickens' home without electricity, Smith carried on his work by candlelight.Function and finishingAntique white bedroom furniture is neutral in colour, shape and designs and so will fit into any bedroom and quickly become a household asset. It will blend in well with existing dcor and can be used to create a warmth and safe environment for children as well as adults. In short, antique white bedroom furniture is about as perfect as it gets so enjoy it!The engineering department works from full-scale detail drawings. "Nothing is left to chance," Smith said. "You can't ask an engineer to interpret a sketch or imagine what a designer has in mind. Every detail is specified, i.e., for drawers: size of the opening, dimensions of fronts, sides, backs, bottoms and rails. The lower section of the double bonnet secretary, for example, has 120 pieces to be engineered. That's where the ball game is won." Smith added that he learned to make full-scale details from his long-time mentor - another Grand Rapids-reared designer - Ray Sobota. The call resulted from a meeting between Henslee and Jeanne-Marie Dickens, wife of the author's great-great-grandson and president of Charles Dickens Heritage Ltd. Hekman was subsequently licensed by the Heritage as the exclusive manufacturer and worldwide distributor of The Charles Dickens Collection. Hekman, a subsidiary of Howard Miller Clock, introduced the 11-piece collection in April at High Point. Two additional pieces were shown in October.

Well what else would you sit and write on?

The collection also includes a drop-leaf tea table in book-matched mahogany; collector's chest in maple solids with olive ash burl; side chair with Queen Anne leg and pad foot; Louis Phillipe-style secretary with a cushion drawer; library or writing table of crotch mahogany and zebrawood; and William and Mary chest-on-stand in walnut solids with maple burl drawer fronts. A sideboard of English yew with cherry solids and crotch mahogany overlay and an occasional table with a leather top were October introductions. However as with all things, the prohibitive cost of craftsmanship meant that by the late 19th Century suppliers of Furniture were looking at techniques that could help bring the cost of manufacture down to more manageable and cost efficient proportions and hence the introduction of the earliest forms of machine assisted furniture.I am often asked as to why a study of furniture is so important? Will it solve the Worlds ills, can it help solve World Poverty (yes if the stuff is manufactured in the right places at the right costs but that is another matter)?PHOTO : Smith is shown with the reproduction desk and chair from Hekman Furniture Co.'s Charles Dickens collection. The desk and chair are exact copies of those used by Dickens from 1858 until his death in 1870, and where he wrote "Great Expectations" and "A Tale of Two Cities."PHOTO : Back in Grand Rapids, Smith checks the fit of a drawer in a library table at the white wood stage. The key to the collection is function. "Each piece has a function," Smith said. "I didn't make that up." But new pizazz comes from the select veneers of feather crotch mahogany, fine-grained English yew, cluster maple burl and olive ash burl and the bands of zebrawood, prima vera and yew wood Hekman uses in borders and trim.Antique white bedroom furniture does not have one particular and definitive style. It can be found in a wide range of designs so that you can personally select one that matches your tastes and home dcor. The fact that it is different in colour means that it gives a room a better, lighter quality than most bedroom furniture and adds an elegance to every room that is hard to create from scratch.Antique white bedroom furniture combines European and American styles. This combination makes it completely different to anything that has ever been created before, although it has been subjected to a few attempted recreations since. It has an innate sense of style that can fit in with most individual tastes so very few people actually dislike it. Most antique furnitures are an acquired taste but antique white furniture is not too hard to get used to! For more info see http://www.antiquefurniturersource.com/Antique_Furniture_Hardware/Replacement_Hardware_For_Antique_Furniture.php on Replacement Hardware For Antique Furniture.Drawer ConstructionPegged Construction"As I came to know Mrs. Dickens, I realized she was not attempting to establish another Williamsburg or Wintherthur foundation. She didn't insist upon preserving every little detail. With her approval, I made certain changes to the designs," Smith said, "but I kept all the proportions the same. We tried to stay as authentic as we possibly could, and still be able to sell furniture.Launching the licensing venture, Hekman's first in 69 years of operation, has been exciting and challenging, according to Henslee. He said the collection appeals equally to Dickens fans, to admirers of historic reproductions and to people who just appreciate good design. Royalties paid to the Dickens Heritage will benefit children's charities.Early Drawers were characterised by the thick sides or linings which were usually channelled so that they could run on bars or runners fixed to the sides of the carcase. As you can imagine these developed quite considerably as the items of furniture or drawers that they were designed to support became more and more delicate and sophisticated. From the 17th Century onwards as with other forms of furniture, the practice of just using simple pegs and runners all but died out to be replaced by more sophisticated runners being placed beneath rather than at the sides of the drawers.Smith grew up in the furniture business. He learned cabinetmaking from his father, who learned from his father. He believes designers should know machine capabilities. "A good designer knows what you can cut on a band saw, how high the fence can be raised, the collar diameter on a router to get minimum shape on a round. As to how important furniture is?Other bedroom furniture comes in a rainbow of browns. Everything from mahogany to walnut to oak usually makes it into a bedroom but can make it seem smaller somehow, not to mention overbearing, and antique white furniture marks a distinct difference. It is undoubtedly unique and thus is definitely more difficult to find. Its popularity does not help with this problem but could potentially raise its value even further. It was during the 17th and 18th Centuries that Furniture Construction as we know more of it nowadays came into its own. With the appearance of Thomas Chippendale (1718-19) furniture manufacture became more sophisticated in its design and execution with finely executed joints and a carcase (body of the item of furniture) that was as well made as the faade.PHOTO : Three drawers are set into the base of a Louis Phillipe-style secretary. Eleven drawers are in the upper cabinet, behind doors. Additional drawers, including a cushion drawer, are hidden. It started with a deskFor the purpose of this article we will be looking at Furniture from the following aspects: Pegged Construction and Drawer Construction, and then in the next article a detailed look at styles of two items of furniture, Chairs and Tables.|Nothing is left to chance'Until the early 18th Century, furniture was constructed by and large using a Pegged or Joined technique using Mortise-and-Tenon joints held together held together quite often just by wooden pegs or dowels and on very rare occasions, nails.Quite often, as the years would go by these joints and pegs would find themselves being pushed out of shape and this is quite often an indicator of firstly, how old a piece is and secondly how well cared for an item of furniture is with the appearance of these joints.Call it a dream assignment. George Smith does. In fact, when Smith, who is director of design at Hekman Furniture, Grand Rapids, got the call to go to England to examine antique furniture belonging to the heirs of English novelist Charles Dickens, he was sure he was dreaming. Smith was hospitalized at the time, recovering from surgery, when Dan Henslee, Hekman president, telephoned and asked him to make the trip to Spofforth in North Yorkshire, England.PHOTO : A library table/writing desk pairs highly-figured crotch mahogany with a band of zebrawood. Carved rosettes decorate its apron and a modified egg-and-dart moulding trims the base.Replicas of the Georgian-style pedestal desk, where Dickens wrote three novels, and his three-splat bow chair with a cane seat and turned legs are the nucleus of the collection. The slant-top desk, an exact reproduction, is made of mahogany solids and veneers with locking drawers. The oldest of the family's original heirlooms, it was built for Charles Dickens in 1858. The author himself designed the sloped writing surface, which was copied in later desks referred to as Dickensian. While he was in England, it was the Christmas season. Children would gather outside, holding lighted candles and singing carols. During a storm, the rectory lost its power and Smith worked by candlelight. "The entire experience was like walking backwards in time," he said."I love to be creative, but if I designed exactly what I want, I'd be gone. I have to design what the dealers expect from Hekman. I have to know the dealers and what they want. If I show a traditional design to a Miami dealer, he'll say, |Get that out of here.' He wants faux marble and glass top tables.""Much of the furniture was in terrible condition," Smith said. Dickens' bookcase, built into his home at Gad's Hill Place in Kent, had been dismantled and stored in a barn. Solid lumber had cracked and split. Tops had buckled. "But the pieces still were worth a fortune. The Dickenses could sell them and never work again, but they won't," Smith said. "They'll hand them down and keep them in the family."PHOTO : The original table in the Dickens' family home. The beautiful finishes are the result of Hekman's multi-step pallet process which includes water bath/stain, wash coat, and multiple sealers and glazings. "We don't do padding," Smith said. "We get our patina the hard way - with a tremendous amount of hand rubbing. Hekman is a hands-on plant."

Antique White Bedroom Furniture: Enhance The Elegance Of Your Bedroom

There are several extremely popular types of antique bedroom furniture at any given time, usually in line with the fashions of the day, but one type seems to remain as popular as it has ever been amongst consumers. Antique white bedroom furniture has a universal appeal because it is different and can brighten up what would otherwise be a dark and dingy bedroom.

PHOTO : For Hekman's new Charles Dickens collection, George J. Smith, ASFD, sketched the heirloom furniture in this 700-year-old rectory in Spofforth, near Harrogate, North Yorkshire, England - the home of Christopher and Jeanne-Marie Dickens. As Smith drew, he noted ideas for making the furniture more marketable: fancy face veneers, the use of lumber core, adding borders and trim. "I knew that we wouldn't be able to sell |as-is' copies," he said. "For instance, a double bonnet secretary had wood doors and shelves. I suggested beveled glass doors and side panels and glass shelves because that's what people want.Well what else would you sit and write on?But back in December 1990, Smith's visit was tentative - to see about the possibility of reproducing copies or adaptations of antiques in use in the home of Christopher Charles and Jeanne-Marie Dickens.

Antique white bedroom furniture is neutral in colour, shape and designs and so will fit into any bedroom and quickly become a household asset. It will blend in well with existing dcor and can be used to create a warmth and safe environment for children as well as adults. In short, antique white bedroom furniture is about as perfect as it gets so enjoy it!
